The 5G standardization has been progressing at an astonishingly rapid phase, where 3GPP Release 15 and Release 16 set the foundations of the 5G system, while Release 17 provides enhancements and optimizations to enable support for further features and use cases. In parallel to 5G standardization efforts, the 5G Public-Private-Partnership (5G PPP) in the scope of the European Framework for Research and Innovation is currently at its peak with more than 40 projects running concurrently. At the same time the European networking research community prepares for the Smart Networks and Service programme that will focus on 5G advanced and 6G.
The 5G/Beyond 5G Architecture Working Group (WG) has issued several white papers; the latest version thereof placed the focus on architectural support for vertical industries. Currently, the 5G/Beyond 5G PPP Architecture WG focuses on the system evolution towards 6G and, representing the European view on the forthcoming system architecture, drives the organisation of this workshop.
The goal of this workshop is two-fold. On the one hand highlight the key architectural innovations required for future 6G mobile and wireless networks. On the other hand, the latest generation of projects in Europe and peer projects worldwide, is working on 5G advanced topics and on formulating research items under the 6G theme. Therefore, this workshop will further provide the floor to these projects to formulate their visions, requirements and architectural considerations for future generation of mobile systems. The focus of the thematic topics will be on technology enablers and design recommendations that will allow to move from 5G and beyond towards a fully-fledged 6G architecture.
