WS17: Next-Generation Radio Access Networks: Architectures, Interfaces, and Implementations

WS17: Next-Generation Radio Access Networks: Architectures, Interfaces, and Implementations

Check out the in-person program with a keynote from Luiz DaSilva (VT) on 12/08.

Different from previous generations of mobile wireless networks, 5G and 6G cellular systems are undergoing an unprecedented architectural transformation, from an inflexible and monolithic system to flexible, agile, programmable, and disaggregated architectures. This will make it possible to support wireless networks with service heterogeneity, coordination among multiple technologies, and rapid on-demand service deployments. Such transformation is enabled by emerging Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) and Software-defined RAN (SD-RAN) paradigms, which provide virtualization, softwarization, intelligence, and flexibility, while defining open interfaces for network innovation. Thanks to this, next-generation 5G and 6G wireless networks will incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) into deployment, operation, and maintenance of the network. Additionally, thanks to the recent investments in large scale community testbeds, such research can be experimentally verified, which will enable the easier transition to practice and refining models and simulators based on experimental data.

This workshop will provide a forum to discuss and exchange innovative ideas, results and share experiences in next generation wireless radio access networks (NG-RANs) architecture, interfaces and implementations. It is targeted to discuss and educate about advances in fundamental and applied research, regulations, standardization, testbeds, and data.
